SUA is proud to feature Okamoto Studio as the “Unique Artist of the Month” in January 2019!
Okamoto Studio founder, Shintaro Okamoto, has been sculpting ice professionally for over 18 years. He was born in Japan and moved to Alaska with his family at a very young age. He learned ice sculpting from his father, Takeo, a sushi chef, who created ice sculptures on the side. Growing up, the father/son team competed together in various ice sculpting competitions.
Shintaro graduated from Brown University, and then moved to New York to obtain an MFA in Painting from Hunter College. In 2003, while still at Hunter, Shintaro and his father founded Okamoto Studio as an artist collective whose mission is to showcase the full beauty and potential of handcrafted ice.
“Whether it’s a diamond-patterned ice bar for a wedding, a detailed replica for a film premiere, a massive monogram for a cool Bar Mitzvah, or an elegant installation for a charity gala, custom sculpted ice by OKAMOTO STUDIO is precise, well considered, effective, and mesmerizing.”
Shintaro is one of the world’s finest ice sculptors and is especially known for his very complicated and detailed sculptures. He has competed in countless ice sculpting competitions, and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Most Extreme Award at the 2011 Unique Art Awards, and first place at Ice Alaska 2013.
